Great Pictures of Newborns

A newborn baby is a precious thing, and capturing that brief time can be so important. They are only that small and fragile for so long. But it can be difficult to take great photographs of them. They're tired, crying, drooling, squirming, doing just about anything they can to ruin your picture. So how can you take the best photo? Here are some techniques that can help you get that great digital photograph.

The easiest time to get your prized picture is when they are first born, between one and three days old (granted that you are home and feeling up to it). During this time, newborns are so completely passed out, that you can put them in virtually any position you want without them waking up. Use this to your advantage. It is a very small window!

"Sleeping" pictures capture the innocence and preciousness of a newborn. No, you won't get all those adorable smiles or funny faces yet. That is further down the road. This is also when they will be at their smallest; they only get bigger from here! Use this to your advantage. Use something to help with scale to demonstrate how small they really are. For example, someone holding the baby in one hand, with their hand as the only part of their body in the picture. Using these types of contrasts can really make a great photo.

Try focusing on parts of the newborn. You can take a picture of just their eyes, or feet, etc. Photography does not have to be limited to a whole subject. Sometimes just looking at parts can be better and more creative. As they grow a little older, it will get a little more challenging. Finding, and getting them to, that perfect pose is no easy task. Remember to have lots of patience and work with what they are giving you. Don't be afraid of capturing all the facial expression, even if they are crying. It's a thing all babies do and I think it can make a great creative photograph. Your baby could be doing just about anything, and as long as you have the shot set up right, you can get that great picture.

So stop worrying about what your baby is doing and pay attention to what you are doing. Try shots from different angles. Most people take pictures head on, front and center. I say "BORING". It makes for a flat, fruitless picture that no one will take a second glance at (OK, maybe they will because your baby is so darn cute, but you can do better!). Try profiles, from above and below, and close up. You would be amazed at the way a newborn's inner soul can show through a photo when you capture "the moment" and not just "a pose".

Pay attention to WHERE you are taking the photos. Having your baby on the floor with your dirty laundry in the background is NOT going to make for a great photo. Try for something simple. I prefer a dark background that helps the newborn "pop" with their light skin tone (or a light background for a dark baby, contrast is key). Or try going outside. Green foliage can be a great background and helps to give texture and depth. The sunlight can light up your newborn gracefully, or can cause nasty shadows. It's a little harder to work with, but well worth it.

Your newborn is already the cutest thing in the world. It won't take much to capture that essence in a photo for all to see. Just remember to be patient and try different things. That is the beauty of a digital camera, experimenting is easy and well worth it. You never know what you may capture!

Taking Better Holiday Pictures

Holidays are great times for getting pictures of family and friends. Everyone is together and normally having a good time, it is people at their best.

It's also important from an historical perspective. You might be tempted to skip taking the camera, but think about how many times you've looked back on old photos of family and friends. For better or worse those pictures mark the progression of your life. I've never looked back on any family event or place I've visited and wished I'd spent less time taking pictures, almost always the opposite.

So take the camera. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your holiday pictures, whether you have an inexpensive point-and-shoot or the finest digital SLR on the market.

Control shake - When you can, brace yourself against a wall, a chair or something to give yourself a little extra stability, particularly when shooting indoors. This is a bigger problem with small cameras using an LCD screen at arm's length, than larger cameras which you're holding closer to your eye.

Check your settings - I'm notorious for bumping my camera mode selector, so I check it religiously. Check to make sure your camera is on the proper setting. For most people taking holiday snaps that will be on "A" for Automatic setting. But don't be afraid to deliberately fiddle with the settings to get a different look, just remember where they were when you started!

Watch those fingers - Yes, even pros get fingers in the way of the flash sensor and the lens, especially with those little point-and-shoot cameras. Stay aware of how you hold the camera.

Take pictures at odd times - Everyone does group pictures before going your separate ways, so think of something different. Shoot pictures at the breakfast table, while traveling somewhere, or other times.

Use odd angles - Experiment. Lay on the ground, find a higher perspective, or some other unusual angle. I once took a picture from the perspective of the Thanksgiving turkey being carried to the table, it's one of our family favorites. It costs nothing to delete digital pictures so don't be afraid to be creative.

Use doors and windows as natural frames - Framing adds visual impact, so use doors and windows to your advantage.

Look for details and texture - Sometimes it's textural details that spur the most vivid memories. A close up of someones hands, the colors of a favorite shirt. Get in close and emphasize the details and textures of your subject.

Use roads and paths as lead lines - Try to find a perspective where a road, path or other picture element leads your eye to the subject. Instead of stand over there by that house, take a perspective farther back and use the path to lead in to the subject.

Take pictures on bad weather days, too - Every day does not have to be a sunny day. Rainy days have their own special appeal and dark clouds can add drama to any scene.

Mainly just have some fun. As I look back on my pictures the ones I like the best are sometimes just pictures of nothing special. A grove of trees outside our old house, a picture of my mom in the kitchen with my nephew and his fiance, candid moments that I just pointed the camera and pushed the button without really even thinking about it.

Where To Start Becoming A Better Photographer

These are some of the ideas for beginning photographers to keep in mind, whether your goal is to take pictures of you family, landscapes, sports, close-ups, pets, street journalism, or if you plan to become a pro (you have to start somewhere).

First, get to know your camera. It take too much time to become a good photographer. Again, this is not true. Of course, you will get better as time goes on and you become more familiar with how to take photos and use your camera, but if you learn a few basics, it will make a world of difference in your picture quality.
